Fair Trade Nicaraguan Pottery and art at NicaNelly

Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a social movement that aims to assist producers in developing countries by offering higher prices for products. This allows the producer to have a higher standard of living including health care and education for their family as well as economic stability. In many developing countries and especially in Nicaragua, putting food on the table is questionable from day to day. Fair Trade gives our producers a chance for the basic necessities of life.

NicaNelly supports Fair Trade

At NicaNelly, almost all of the products we sell are Fair Trade. We meet with many of our producers on a regular basis. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas. Purchasing products from NicaNelly directly benefits the artisans from Nicaragua who take pride in their craftsmanship.

Many of our producers have generations of experience in their trade. Techniques are handed down from Great Grandma to Grandma to the current family who is now benefiting from these decades of practice and knowledge. Giving the producer a Fair Trade price for their product allows the family to stay in the craft they have perfected. At NicaNelly we are pleased and honored to be apart of this.

Meet Some of Our Producers

Many of these products can only be purchased at our store in Talent Oregon; others can also be purchased on our online store. If you see something that might be of interest, please contact us. What is displayed here is only a small portion of the products we carry. Visit our store in Talent to see all of our artisan partner’s works.

Nicaraguan Pottery

The pottery displayed here takes at least 1 ½ months to produce. They are all made by hand. Electricity is unreliable in Nicaragua so the pottery spinning wheel is typically foot powered. Every inch of the product is covered six times with a wax pencil in order to achieve the shine. All lines and divots are created by hand. These pieces of art can only really be appreciated in person the photos do not give them justice. Feel free to come by our store in Talent, Oregon to see the details that can’t be displayed here.

Lourdes Martinez is a perfect example of a generational producer. She learned much of her pottery skills from her Grandmother. NicaNelly proudly purchases a number of her works. Here are a few of them:

Duillo Cano-Hemenez is one of our producers with a unique style. Here are some of his works:

Roger Calero has won many awards for his pottery. We purchase a number of his pieces. Roger is another example of a generational producer.

Mirna Hernandez and her family are our sole hammock producers. All of the hammocks are made with soft-spun cotton and exotic hardwood. We have a number of hammocks on our online store. Others are found at our store in Talent Oregon.
